in a small community in connecticut. sandy hook elementary school in the small community of about 27,000 residents was the site of a shooting rampage. at this hour, we know 26 people at the school were shot and killed by a lone gunman. 20 of those deceased were children. surviving students and their parents said teachers ordered children to hide in closets. witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots, as many as 100 rounds. police found the shooter dead. officers never fired a shot. the gunman's mother was found dead at a newtown location where the gunman lived. police have released no motive for the attack. the weapons used in the shooting were all legally purchased and were registered to the gunman's mother. an emotional president obama addressed the nation this afternoon from the white house. >> we've endured too many of these tragedies in the past few years. and each time i learn the news, i react not as a president, but as anybody else would, as a parent. and that was especially true today. i know there is not a parent in america who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that

depuned down in sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. good morning to you, i am john scott in new york. >> i am gena lee 60 miles from where john is. it is reflecting as well. we were on the air 11:00 eastern time when we first tart tod understand what was taking place in sandy hook elementary school. the information came out so slowly and some of the initial information that we received turned out to be false. we explained for our viewers a moment ago and hopefully you saw the mary ann an jacob. she was able to get the 18 fourth graders in a storage close yest pushed the file cab nes and he heard the banging on the door she didn't want to open up. shed for the badge to be slipped underneath the door because they were simply afraid as we all understand. one thingings that we are continuing to watch in newtown the media staging area. we heard from the state police an hour ago and we should be error hearing from the superintendent of the schools any time this hour. we are craving for more information and try to piece together exactly what happened. >> it is misterous what mot

they are teaching. when you have a tragedy as bad as connecticut, the teachers on top of the parents have also lost a child. i had two teachers in elementary schools. the security there is as much as the security is going to get in the school. when you look at schools and said, this is the safest place to be. for it to happen in an elementary school, the first school you enter as a child, that is devastating. when you see the parents crying and upset, you have to rush back to your child's school because there has been this devastating event happened. host: you are an educator in baltimore and we are showing the front page of "the baltimore sun." talk to us about the security of your school. what does a person have to do to get into the school during the school day? caller: you have to be bused in, you go to the office to get a pass. the office personnel are not equipped to handle a gunman coming through the door. even if you take the precaution of having the doors locked and going through the office first, there is no security in the office. there is no security guard. you just sign in and say what
